Crow Museum of Asian Art

With two locations, the museum celebrates cultures of Asian countries, from ancient to contemporary.

Walk the scene of one the most popular murder stories in the small green space where John F. Kennedy was fatally shot in 1963. Tack on a visit to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to learn about the city’s history if your budget allows.

Meadows Museum

Complimentary admission is offered Thursdays after 5 p.m. to make for a fun date night at one of the leading U.S. institutions dedicated to preserving Spanish Art.

For an affordable and central option, the S Akard Street Parking Lot (801 Browder Street) starts at just $2 for 2 hours.

Downtown meters are in effect daily from 7am to 6pm, with rates ranging from $0.50 to $2 per hour, and you can pay with coins or a card. Some lots on the outskirts of downtown even offer all-day parking for as low as $3.

Other free public events

  • To research and select your own free events, I recommend Do214 or Visit Dallas Free Events . I recommend staying in their free events section included in the link – it can get a bit overwhelming otherwise.

Nine Outdoorsy Date Ideas

When the weather’s just right, why stay indoors? Dallas offers plenty of fresh-air adventures perfect for couples who love sunshine, open skies, and a little dirt on their shoes. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on a hiking trail, paddling across a peaceful lake, or enjoying a picnic under the stars, these outdoorsy date ideas bring romance—and a breeze.

1. Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Wander hand in hand through vibrant gardens overlooking White Rock Lake. Pack a picnic or join one of their many seasonal events or concerts for a charming day or evening together.

2. Katy trail

Jog or stroll the trail, then reward yourselves with drinks at the Katy Trail Ice House — a classic local hangout with great atmosphere.

3. SMU Grounds

Stroll the beautiful, tree-lined campus and admire the fountains. Afterwards, grab coffee or a quick bite at Kuby’s in nearby Snyder Plaza. Be sure to check SMU’s event calendar for special happenings.

4. Texas Discovery Gardens

Explore this 7.5-acre organic garden teeming with plants, butterflies, and insects — a sweet, peaceful escape for nature lovers.

5. White Rock Lake

  • Bike or walk a loop, or rent a kayak and paddle around. Keep an eye out for the occasional bald eagle soaring overhead! For a spectacular sunset, grab snacks at Trader Joe’s on Lower Greenville and relax on the eastern docks.
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, head into the White Rock Lake Wildlife Protected Area near the dam. You’ll find trails for walking and soaking in the scenery — including a surprising little swamp right in the middle of Dallas! You can access the area from the pedestrian bridge on the dam (on the side opposite the lake).
  • Heads up: the mosquitoes here are on another level compared to typical Dallas nature spots, so definitely bring bug spray. And if you’re prone to poison ivy, it’s a good idea to cover up or have some Tecnu handy to wash off any oil afterward. Trust me, you’ll want to be prepared — or this beautiful spot could turn into an itchy ordeal!

6. Take a Leisurely Walk Around a Neighborhood or Local Park

Dress it up by visiting a fancy neighborhood to admire beautiful homes and landscaping. Or simply enjoy each other’s company on a quiet stroll. Consider feeding ducks with plain oats—healthier than bread!

7. Heard Nature Preserve

Enjoy night hikes, bird watching, canoe trips, and scenic trails at Heard Nature Preserve. It offers a variety of nature experiences at affordable prices—including a canoe tour through the wetlands, which is a fantastic budget-friendly alternative to pricier boat rides like the Lake Carolyn Gondolas or the White Rock Lake catamaran.

8. Take a Hike

Hiking together is a perfect way to chat uninterrupted, get some fresh air, and maybe discover a cool view together. For safety, keep your look simple and practical — think silicone workout jewelry and basic gear, and leave valuables at home. Some trails can get remote, so stay aware and enjoy the adventure.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

Ideal for a “city hike” with paved and unpaved trails; popular on weekends.

Stewart Creek Park

Spanning 65 acres along the shores of Lake Lewisville, Stewart Creek Park offers picturesque views and a tranquil atmosphere. Signage on the trail provides cool details about the local eco system. In my experience, this trail is much less crowded out on the trails than Arbor Hills, but the camping area out on the water gets crowded.

Trinity Forest

Trinity Forest is a hidden gem for nature trails, bird watching, and a forest feel close to the city. It feels very remote and nature-y compared to Arbor Hills and Stewart Creek. Take advantage of a guided hike if you are new to nature but want to explore.

  • The Trinity River Audubon Center is nestled within the Great Trinity Forest, one of the largest urban forests in the U.S. Spanning approximately 6,000 acres, the forest offers a mix of parks, trails, and natural spaces, all part of the larger Trinity River Corridor Project. The center itself is located on a 120-acre site, with five miles of nature trails and educational programs. While exploring, I’ve spotted a few deer and fascinating birds like hawks.
  • During my biking adventures, I’ve encountered some brightly colored snakes, including one water moccasin. While snakes give me the heebie-jeebies, they remind me of just how wild and untouched this natural space feels.

Cedar Ridge

Heads up: Call before you go to make sure the trails are open! Several times when I have planned to visit, the trails have been closed due to wet weather in weeks prior. I love this spot but be prepared to pivot in the event the trails are closed.

Visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CRPaudubondallas/or call to ensure availability  972-709-7784

Cedar Ridge Preserve is a natural habitat of 600 acres featuring about 9 miles of hiking-only trails ranging from easy to moderately difficult, native trees, grasses and wildflowers, butterfly gardens, limited picnic areas and wild mammals, birds, insects, and reptiles.

Oak Cliff Nature Preserve

The Oak Cliff Nature Preserve offers a peaceful retreat just minutes from downtown Dallas. With its scenic trails winding through woodlands and wetlands, it’s a perfect spot for those looking to enjoy a quiet walk, bike ride, or birdwatching adventure. Enjoy the scenic views and hiking trails. This hidden gem in the heart of the city is ideal for nature lovers seeking an urban escape.
